Often referred to as the “Forbidden Kingdom,” Upper Mustang remained closed to foreigners until 1992, making it one of the least explored regions within the Annapurna Conservation Area. This trek provides an opportunity to explore the ancient Kingdom of Lo, where trekkers can immerse themselves in Tibetan culture, witness unique landscapes, and visit centuries-old monasteries.
The Upper Mustang Trek spans a week of trekking through the Himalayas, beginning with a scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Although every village in Upper Mustang is accessible by road, the trekking route follows an untouched trail toward the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang, avoiding the road and offering a more authentic experience. The trail winds along the Kali Gandaki River and passes through areas such as Muktinath, Tetang, Yara, and Tangge.
Lo Manthang, known as the “Forbidden Kingdom of Lo,” is a secluded town near the Tibetan border in the Annapurna region. This ancient walled city houses the Royal Palace, monasteries, residences, and Buddhist caves, all enclosed within its walls. Due to its restricted status, trekking in Upper Mustang requires a special permit.
During the journey to Lo Mantmerged through spiritual force. Legend has it that there are seven such chortens, but only two have been discovered.
One of the highlights of the Upper Mustang Trek is the region’s extraordinary terrain, featuring canyon valleys and a desert-like landscape at high altitudes. Despite its arid conditions, Upper Mustang is also known for its delicious and distinctively flavored apples.
This trek takes a different route from the standard Upper Mustang Trek to avoid the road, offering a more serene and road-free experience.
The weather in Upper Mustang is distinct from the rest of Nepal, as it lies in a rain shadow region, resulting in dry and arid conditions year-round. The best times to visit are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and dry.
Winter (December to February) brings significantly colder temperatures, with nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing. Summer (June to August) sees temperatures rise to around 25°C, but the nights remain chilly. Although it’s the monsoon season in Nepal, Upper Mustang experiences minimal rainfall.
Due to the high altitude and cold, dry climate, it’s essential to pack appropriate clothing. Extra layers, jackets, and inner thermals are recommended, along with light jackets and windcheaters for unexpected winds. Minor dust storms are also possible in the summer and spring.
Trekking in Upper Mustang requires specific permits due to its status as a restricted area bordering Tibet. The required permits are:

I trekked with the Bibek of Hiker Himalaya in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal. He was exceedingly diligent, flexible and attentive to my requests and needs. The daily treks were well-paced: we typically arrived at our destination in the early afternoon so that I had time to do some sightseeing in the village and surrounding environs. I would highly recommend him and his company for your trekking excursions.
We had a wonderful Mustang trek with Bibek! He was very kind, helpful and full of joy during this trek! This trek is the best memory of our trip, the scenery and people were amazing! We highly recommend it for a trek to Nepal!
