Flights to Lukla or Overland Road Trip to Lukla: Gateway of Everest

The first thing that trekkers have to do for the EBC Trek in Nepal is reaching the Lukla. It is the scenic town and gateway of the Everest. The classical Everest Base Camp Trekking used to start from the town of Jiri before the construction of the Tenzing Hillary Lukla Airport. However, the trekking scene of the Everest region changed astronomically after the operation of the Lukla Airport. The world’s most extreme airport serves as the cornerstone of trekking and tour activities in the region.

During the peak season, trekkers may have to use Manthali Airport instead of Kathmandu Domestic Airport for the flight to Lukla. It is to manage the traffic and utilize the short flying window as the Lukla weather conditions are highly unpredictable. Nowadays, trekkers can also choose to reach Lukla via road trip but note that you can’t reach Lukla directly by road. The road network has connected Surke village (1 hour from Lukla) and Salleri via bumpy dry season road.

Importance of Acclimatization for Everest Trek

The journey of the Everest Base Camp Trek is one of the leading high – altitude trekking trips. Therefore, you need to be aware of the risks of the altitude sickness. The best way to avoid fatal altitude sickness risks is by doing proper acclimatization. The activities of acclimatization help trekkers to adapt with the demands of the low oxygen level high – altitude places. There are two acclimatization days during the EBC Trek in Nepal. The first acclimatization is at Namche Bazaar and the second one is at the Dingboche Village. The concept of acclimatization is that you reach the high – altitude place but return back to low – altitude place for overnight sleep.

Namche Bazaar and Everest View Hotel

The Namche Bazaar is the Khumbu and Sherpa heartland. It is the major marketplace of Upper Khumbu region. Trekkers can find eateries, banks, shops, lodges, and local houses in this place which is probably the highest situated vibrant town up in the Himalayas. Normally, travelers spend three nights in this village during the Everest Trekking including acclimatization day. As for the acclimatization, trekkers hike to the Everest View Hotel (3880 m). Relish the chance to behold the vista of more than a dozen mountains.

Dingboche Village: Acclimatization and Last Densely Populated Sherpa Village

The second acclimatization is at the last densely populated Sherpa Village on the EBC Trek route – Dingboche Village (4400 m). The Nagarshan Hill (5100 m) hike prepares trekkers for trekking activities beyond 4400 m from sea level.

DREAMS COME TRUE

My wife and I recently used this company to support our climb to EBC. For 12 years, the climb to EBC was my wifes dream to achieve. We had the pleasure of having Bibek and Mangla aid us during this journey. We have climbed many mountains around the world, Bibek and Mangla are without doubt, the best team we’ve had the pleasure of helping us. I strongly recommend them if you are going to take in this adventure. You will not be disappointed. Jeff & Karen the “DO EPIC SH*T” couple.

Full disclosure upfront, I haven’t trekked with Bibek from Hikers Himalaya.

Full disclosure upfront, I haven’t trekked with Bibek from Hikers Himalaya. BUT I worked with Bibek for seven years through a Nepali trekking agency that I organised treks for, so feel I’m well qualified to write this review.

I can honestly say he’s on par with the best guide you’ll find in Nepal. Feedback from clients who trekked with Bibek was consistently as good as it gets. In fact other trekkers asked our clients which company he worked for because they saw how good he was!

I always felt completely reassured when allocating Bibek to guide clients. He’s very experienced and knowledgeable, plus he’s one of the nicest people you could hope to meet – the perfect recipe for a guide you’ll want to spend several days with (and believe me when I say, your guide can make or break your trip).

Bibek will go out of his way to create the perfect trip based on your requirements and will adapt to fit your needs on the go – another important quality!

Honestly, I can’t recommend him highly enough.
